The Boston Red Sox' bats came alive Friday night, banging out 14 hits and Chris Sale pitched like the ace he once was, as the Red Sox beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 to open a 3-game series.

Sale went 5.0 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run. He struck out 3 and walked 1, improving his record to 5-2.

Josh Winckowski came on in relief, throwing 3.0 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run, striking out 1. Brennan Bernadino pitched the 9th inning striking out and walking 1.


Alex Verdugo, was 3-5 with a run batted in. Kike Hernandez hit a 2-run homer in the 4th inning.

Josh Turner and Connor Wong, each had 2 hits, including a double.

Friday night's game was Alex Cora's 1000th as a member of the Red Sox.  He appeared in 301 games for Boston as a player (169-132), and Friday night was his 699th as the club’s manager (388-310).

Boston and Arizona play the middle game of the 3-game series Saturday night. The pregame starts at 6:15 with the 1st pitch at 7:15 p.m. Hear the game on AM 1370 WDEA in Downeast Maine and on 101.9 The Rock in Aroostook County.
