Red Sox Shutout Orioles 9-0 Clinch Playoff Spot
The Boston Red Sox have clinched at the least, a wild card spot, after beating the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, September 20th, 9-0 and the Indians beating the Angels 6-5. That guarantees that at a minimum the Red Sox would play in the 1 game wild card game on Tuesday, October 3rd. But the Red Sox have the AL East Division title in their sights! The Red Sox remain 3 games ahead of the New York Yankees with 10 games left to play.
Wednesday night, Chris Sale was dominant, throwing 7 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 13 without walking a batter. The 13th strikeout was his 300th of the season. Sale is only the 2nd Red Sox pitcher to strike out 300 or more pitchers in a season. He is the 1st pitcher since Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez did so in 1999. Martinez is the only other Red Sox pitcher to reach that plateau.
Mookie Betts was 2-4 with a homer and triple. Hanley Ramirez was 3-5 with 2 doubles. Devin Marrero was 1-5 with a homer and 2 RBIs.
The Red Sox are off on Thursday, and open their final road series on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds. The pregame Friday will start at 6:20 with the 1st pitch at 7:05 on AM 1370 WDEA.
