Red Sox Return to 1st Place – Beat Yankees 5-4 Thursday Night [VIDEO]
The Boston Red Sox are back in 1st place, tied with the New York Yankees as they took the final game of the 3 game series in New York 5-4. The Red Sox are now 11-1 in series finales this year!
The Red Sox were cruising up 4-0 before there was a 55 minute rain delay. That spelled the end for Eduardo Rodriguez who went 5 scoreless innings allowing only 1 hit. He struck out 8 and walked 3. Matt Barnes pitched a scoreless 6th, but then Heath Hembree and Joe Kelly allowed 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game.
JD Martinez hit his 9th homer of the season in the top of the 8th inning, off of Dellin Betances, for the go ahead run. Craig Kimbrel pitched the 9th for his 10th save of the season.
In addition to the Martinez homer, the Red Sox's Hanley Ramirez hit his 5th homer of the season off of CC Sabathia in the 5th inning. Mookie Betts continued his hot hitting, going 3-4 with a double and is now batting .361, to lead the majors. Andrew Benintendi also doubled for the Red Sox.
The Yankees have now won 17 of their last 18 games and will open a 3 game series with the Oakland A's on Friday, May 11th in New York.
