The Boston Red Sox continued to struggle offensively early in the season, losing to the Baltimore Orioles 8-5 on Monday in the O's home opener.

Boston was outhit 15-8 and Rafael Devers continued to be outmatched at the plate, going 0-3, striking out 3 times and walking twice. Devers is hitless on the season, going 0-19 with 15 strikeouts in 5 games.

Jarren Duran batting leadoff was 2-5 with a triple, driving in 3 runs.

Rob Refsnyder making his 1st start of the season, was 2-3. Romy Gonzalez, also starting for the 1st time, played 1st base to give Tristan Casas a day off and was 2-4 with a double and run batted in.

Sean Newcomb making his 1st start for the Red Sox was knocked around in 4.0 innings, allowing 8 hits and 4 runs, all earned. He struck out 4 and walked 2. Garrett Whitlock pitched 2 innings of 1-hit relief, striking out 2. Greg Weissert pitched the 7th inning, striking out 1 and allowing 1 hit. Justin Slaten came on for the 8th inning and didn't retire a batter, allowing 3 hits and 4 runs, walking 1. Cooper Criswell finally closed out the 8th inning, allowing 2 hits.

Former Red Sox, Tyler O'Neill who signed with Baltimore in the off-season was 4-4 and is batting .571 so far this season.

According to multiple sources the Red Sox and Garret Crochet have agreed to a 6-year 170 million extension. The deal runs from 2026-31, with an opt-out clause after the 2030 season. Crochet had stated that he would not negotiate on an extension if it wasn't done during Spring Training.

Boston is now 1-4 and Baltimore is 3-2. The teams are off on Tuesday. They will play the 2nd game of their 3-game series on Wednesday, April 2. The pregame starts at 5:35 p.m with the 1st pitch at 6:30 p.m. on AM 1370 WDEA.
