The news prior to Friday night's game for the Boston Red Sox wasn't good. Their lead-off hitter Kike Hernandez was diagnosed with COVID-19. Christian Arroyo was deemed a close contact and both Hernandez and Arroyo were placed on the COVID Injured List. JD Martinez in a 0-20 funk was given the night off and Hunter Renfroe was on the Bereavement List. 4 starters out! Yet the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 4-3 with Jonathan Arauz hitting a 3 run homer in the 8th inning!

Arauz you ask? He was recalled along with Yairo Munoz to fill the spots on the roster. In fact they took a bus ride, using the Worcester Woo Sox bus from Buffalo to get to the game in time! Arauz finished the game 1-2 with the big 3 run blast.

Eduardo Rodriguez went deep into the game, going 7 innings. He gave up 8 hits and 3 runs. He struck out 2 and walked 1. He picked up the win and is now 10-7 on the season.

Garrett Richards, pitching back-to-back nights from the bullpen pitched the 8th inning, striking out 2.

Adam Ottavino came on for the 9th inning. Despite a lead-off walk he picked up his 9th save of the season, striking out 2.

Bobby Dalbec had a double and Jarren Duran had Boston's other hits.

Boston's outfield picked up another assist, as Alex Verdugo gunned down Jose Ramirez as he tried to stretch a single into a double.

Logan Allen was masterful for the Indians on the mound going 6.0 innings and allowing just 1 hit and 1 run while he struck out 5.

Ramirez and Yu Change both homered for Cleveland.

Manager Alex Cora on the game.

Boston didn't pick up any ground on the Yankees or Rays who both won Friday night and are in 3rd place, but own the 2nd Wild Card spot, 3.5 games ahead of the Oakland A's.

Boston and Cleveland play Game 2 of the 3-game series Saturday afternoon. The pregame starts at 3:05 p.m. and 1st pitch at 4:05 p.m. on AM 1370 WDEA.
