The Boston Red Sox are limping home after being swept in Detroit, losing 6-5 in the 9th inning as the Tigers scored the winning run with 2 out.

The Red Sox had a golden opportunity to score in the top of the 9th with runners on 1st and 3rd and the game tied 5-5. But Rafael Devers struck out for the 2nd time of the game and Alex Bregman hit a grounder that looked like it had a chance to get into the outfield, but Detroit fielded the ball, narrowly getting the runner at 2nd.

Hunter Dobbins started for the Red Sox, and went 5..0 innings allowing 9 hits and 5 runs. He struck out 4 and didn't walk a batter. Justin Wilson pitched a hitless 6th inning, Liam Hendriks an hitless 7th inning and Justin Slaten a hitless 8th inning. Aroldis Chapman took the loss and is 2-2 after allowing the winning hit.

Bregman hit his 11th home run of the season, a solo homer in the 4th inning. He finished 3-4 on the night.

Devers was 2-5 with a run batted in. Carlos Narvaez was 2-3. Nick Sogard playing 1st base was 1-4. Ceddanne Rafaela was 2-4.

Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela combined for the catch of the year, robbing Detroit of a home run!

Boston is now 22-23, a game below .500 and now in 3rd place in the AL East.

Prior to the game the Red Sox placed Tanner Houck on the 15 Day injured list with a strained elbow, recalling Cooper Criswell.
