Lucas Giolito, started for the Red Sox and pitched 4.2 innings, melting down in the 5th inning, when he issued 4 straight walks, to allow the Padres to take a 4-3 lead. He finished the night allowing 5 hits and 4 runs, striking out 1 and walking 6.

The Padres won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning, when Ramón Laureano singled in Xander Bogaerts from second base with no outs off of Garrett Whitlock who took the loss. Whitlock is now 5-2.

Roman Anthony tied the game in the 9th inning, hitting a ground-rule double, scoring Ceddanne Rafaela. Anthony finished the night 1-5.

Alex Bregman was 3-4 with a pair of doubles.

Jarren Duran was 2-4 with a run batted in.

Masataka Yoshida was 2-4 with a run batted in.

Boston had plenty of chances to score, but were 3-14 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.

Former Red Sox Xander Boegarts had a big night, going 2-4 with a home run, his 10th of the season, in the 2nd inning. He drove in 2 runs.

Manny Machado tried pulling the "hidden ball" trick on Jarren Duran in the 3rd inning. But Wandy Peralta was on the pitching rubber when Machado tagged Duran, which resulted in a balk, allowing Duran to score. The rule is that the pitcher cannot be on the rubber while a fielder tags out the runner on a "hidden ball" trick.
