Northern Maine Champs [VIDEO]
It's been 22 years since the MDI Trojans have played for the Gold Ball, but they will do so Friday, March 3 at 7:30 PM in Augusta after defeating the Orono Red Riots 42-34 to become the Class B Northern Maine Champions!
MDI jumped out to a 10-6 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. Andrew Phelps and Russell Kropff had 3-pointers and Aaron Snurkowski and Riley Swanson had 2 points each for the Trojans. For Orono Keenan Collett had 4 points and Jake Koffman had 2 points.
MDI led 20-17 at the end of the 1st Half. Aaron Snurkowski had a 3-pointer, Andrew Phelps, Riley Swanson and Mac She each had 2 points and Gus Reeves was 1-2 from the free throw line. For Orono Nate Desisto had 5 points, hitting a 3-pointer as time expired. Connor Robertso, Connor McCluskey and Keenan Collett each had 2 points for Orono.
MDI's lead was still 3 points at the end of the 3rd Quarter as they led 31-28. Graham Good and Derek Collin each had 4 points for the Trojans and Riley Swanson hit a 3-pointer. For Orono Jackson Coutts was 4-4 from the free throw line, Keenan Collett was 2-2 from the free throw line, Evan Kenefic hit a 3-pointer as time expired and Connor Robertson had 2 points.
In the 4th Quarter, MDI pulled away. Riley Swanson had 5 points wiht a 3-pointer, Graham Good and Aaron Snurkowski each had 2 points and Russell Kropff was 2-2 from the free throw line. For Orono Jackson Coutts had a 3-pointer and Nate Desisto had 3 points.
MDI was led by Riley Swanson with 12 points and Graham Good and Aaron Snurkowski had 7 points each.
Orono was led by Keenan Collett and Nate Desisto each of whom had 8 points. Jackson Coutts had 7 points.
MDI avenged their earlier loss to Orono 51-49 on January 31st and when Orono knocked MDI out of Tourney 2016 in the Quarterfinals.
MDI will play Wells in the State Finals next Friday night. Wells beat MDI in the State Class B Football Finals in the Fall. The State Finals will be broadcast on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP sponsored by First National Bank and on AM 1370 WDEA.
