Congratulations to MDI High School's Mark Shields who was named the 8-Man Large School Coach of the Year by the Maine Football Coaches Association.

Shields led the MDI Trojans to their 1st ever Football State Championship this past year when they defeated Greely.28-0.

Coach Shields has a long history as football coach at MDI High School. Shields served under George "Toog" McKay as an assistant coach for 7 years and became the head coach in 2003, a position he has held for the last 15 years, before retiring in 2018

As of 2018, Shields overall record as the Head Football Coach at MDI was 74-68 with an Eastern Maine Runner-up in 2008, Northern Maine Champion in 2016 and Runner-up in 2017. Mark was named the Conference Coach of the Year in 2013, 2015 and 2017 and also was named the Maine Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2016.

He rejoined the staff as an assistant for the 2019. MDI started playing 8-man football in the 2021-22 season.

Shields returned to the field as the Head Coach to lead the Trojans in the 8-Man Large School Conference in the 2022-23 season.
