The State of Maine has eliminated its residency requirement for the administration of COVID-19 vaccines, effective immediately. This change reflects:

  • Increasing supply of COVID-19 vaccine;
  • Growing numbers of seasonal workers arriving in Maine for agriculture, aquaculture, hospitality, and tourism;
  • Arrival of seasonal residents;
  • Returning college students; and
  • Further simplification of the vaccination process by removing the need to verify proof of residency.

Any individual 12 or older is eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in Maine. The Moderna and Johnson & Johnson / Janssen vaccines are all authorized for individuals 18 and older and the Pfizer vaccine is authorized for those 12 and older.

Mount Desert Island Hospital has launced a new online COVID-19 vaccine registration portal for eligible Maine residents. The portal went live on MDI Hospital’s COVID-19 vaccine webpage on Friday, March 26 at 1 pm

Going forward, MDI Hospital will post their vaccine availability for the upcoming week on their website on Thursday afternoons following the state’s weekly dose order. New vaccine appointments will be added to their online registration portal on Friday afternoons when available. The call line at 207-801-5011 will be open from 12-1 on Fridays when doses are available to assist those who require scheduling assistance.

Under the new Federal policy, participants in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program – which includes certain Hannaford, Walgreens and Walmart pharmacies in Maine – are now directed to give access to available appointments exclusively to school staff and licensed child care workers. Existing appointments for those aged 60 and over at these pharmacies will remain active. School staff and child care workers should first check the websites of retail pharmacy partners for vaccine availability. A listing of Maine’s vaccination sites and retail pharmacies can be found here
