According to the Portland Press Herald MDI High School has been awarded a grant of $280,000 to nearly cover the cost of a new $300,000 electric school bus.
The money comes from Volkswagen and the emission scandal settlement. In that settlement, Volkswagen agreed to pay $14.7 billion nationally toward pollution mitigation
According to the article Thomas Built Buses, an industry leader, estimates an electric school bus can save $4,400 a year in maintenance and $2,000 in fuel, compared to diesel. Plus there's the elimination of green house gases.
The e-bus at MDI will be the first electric school bus in Maine
