MDI Football Loses to Stearns 48-42 in Controversial Ending [PHOTOS]
The MDI Trojans lost to the Stearns Minutemen 48-42 in Bar Harbor on Saturday, afternoon September 4th. With the game tied 42-42 and Stearns marching inside the 5 yard line, it appeared that Spencer Laurendeau recovered a Minuteman fumble and ran it back 97 yards to put MDI ahead 48-42. There were no whistles. However the officials huddled together, and after a couple minutes of discussion ruled that the runner was downed and it wasn't a fumble.
The ball was placed at the 2 yard line, and Stearns subsequently scored to take a 48-42 lead.
Both teams lost their starting quarterbacks, Alex Fernald for MDI and Elliot Shearer for Stearns to injuries. But, both reserve quarterbacks, Spencer Laurendeau for MDI and Caleb Shearer for Stearns played very well
Stearns scored 1st with 7:38 left in the 1st Quarter when Elliot Shearer ran in from 4 yards out. The 2-point conversion was good when Jack Morris ran in, and Stearns led 8-0
MDI scored with 1:50 left in the 1st Quarter. Aiden Grant ran in from 21 yards out for the touchdown. The 2-point conversion was no good, and Stearns led 8-6
MDI took the lead with 8:08 left in the 1st Half, when Laurendeau completed a pass to Aiden Grant in the middle of the field that Grant caught 1-handed. The 2-point conversion was good as Grant ran it in, and the the Trojans led 14-8
Stearns tied it with 4:30 left in the 1st Half when Elliot Shearer ran in from 1 yard out. The 2 point conversion was no good, and the score was 14-14.
With 1:01 left in the 1st Half, Laurendeau ran in from 4 yards out. The 2-point conversion was good, when Laurendeua ran in, and the Trojans led 22-14.
With no time left, Caleb Shearer completed a 7 yard pass to Aiden Sanders for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion was no good and the Trojans led 22-20 at the end of the 1st Half.
MDI scored 1st in the 3rd Quarter, when Laurendeau completed a 30 yard pass to Brendan Graves. The 2 point conversion was no good and MDI led 28-20.
It was 34-20 when Aiden Grant ran it in from 51 yards out. The 2 point conversion was no good.
Stearns then took the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown, as Aiden Sanders took the ball at the 29 yard line and scored a 71 yard kickoff return. The 2 point conversion was good and Stearns trailed 34-28.
The Minutemen scored again, and took a 2 point lead. Shawn Clements ran in from 1 yard out, and with the 2 point conversion good, Stearns led 36-34 with 11:55 left.
MID answered with Aiden Grant's 3 yard touchdown. The 2 point conversion was good and MDI led 42-36.
With 7:38 left, Clements ran in from 30 yards out. The 2 point conversion was no good, and the score was tied 42-42.
MDI was marching, but Laurendeau fumbled with 5:19 left on the Minuteman 14 yard line.
Stearns scored the winning touchdown with 1;16 left after the Laurendeau fumble recovery was called back. Caleb Shearer scored from the 2 yard line with 1:16 left.
Laurendeau was picked off by Aidan Sanders and Stearns took 3 knees to end the game.
