MDI Football Falls to Oceanside 40-30 [PHOTOS]
The MDI Trojan Football Team fell to Oceanside 40-30 on the opening night of the 2018 Football Season, August 31st in Bar Harbor.
MDI won the opening coin toss and chose to defer, getting the ball in the 2nd Half. Oceanside started their possession on their own 35 yard line after MDI's opening kick went out of bounds. 6 plays later Ben Ripley found the end zone on a 4 yard run. The 2 point conversion was good and Oceanside led 8-0 with 9:22 left in the 1st Quarter.
MDI then took over on their own 20 yard line and moved the ball with ease. They were on the goal line when they fumbled the ball, with Oceanside recovering in the end zone for a touchback. Oceanside took over on their own 20 yard line with 6:36 remaining in the 1st Quarter.
MDI's defense stiffened, and forced a fumble, with sophomore Hunter Gray recovering the fumble, on the Trojan 24 yard line, with 4:30 remaining in the 1st Quarter.
The Trojan offense couldn't move the ball and were forced to punt. After a short punt, Oceanside took over on the MDI 45 yard line, with 3:30 remaining in the 1st Quarter.
Oceanside's Karl Ilvonen was picked off by sophomore Tyler Woodworth for MDI and the Trojans had the ball on their own 30 yard line with 1:54 remaining in the 1st Quarter.
Again MDI had difficulty moving the ball, and had to punt again. Oceanside took over at the 50 yard line with 11:53 remaining in the 1st Half.
MDI's defense stiffened, and Oceanside turned the ball over on downs, with MDI taking over at their own 27 yard line with 5:33 remaining in the Half.
The Trojans found the end zone, on a 70 yard pass completion from Baylor Landsman to Elijah Joyce. Joyce came out of the backfield, and it was just a little pass into the flat, and Joyce was able to get to the outside and outran the defenders into the end zone. The 2 point conversion was good as Joyce ran the ball in, and MDI and Oceanside were tied 8-8 with 4:36 remaining in the 1st Half.
Oceanside took over the ball on their own 34 and time expired with the score tied 8-8.
MDI received the kick off to start the 2nd Half. at the Oceanside 42. The Trojans took the ball down and took advantage of a late hit penalty before turning the ball over on downs at the Oceanside 15 with 7:13 remaining in the 3rd Quarter.
MDI again picked off Ilvonen, this time Sam Hoff had the interception and the Trojans took over on the Oceanside 21 with 6:03 remaining in the 3rd Quarter.
The Trojan offense couldn't convert despite getting into the red zone, and pooch punted. The special team did a great job downing the ball at the Oceanside 3 yard line.
The Trojan's defense forced another fumble, and the Trojans took over on the Oceanside 12 yard line with 2:02 remaining in the 3rd Quarter.
This time MDI capitalized on the turnover, as Joyce ran in from 2 yards out. The 2 point conversion was good, and MDI led 16-8 with 1:35 remaining in the 3rd Quarter.
Oceanside took on their own 18 yard line and promptly scored as Ripley ran in from 5 yards out. The 2 point conversion was good with Zach Cody running in, and the score was tied at 16-16 with 5.9 seconds remaining in the 3rd Quarter.
MDI was forced to punt again and Oceanside took the ball and scored again to take a 22-16 lead on a 32 yard pass from Ilvonen to Michael Yates. The 2 point conversion was no good.
MDI turned the ball over on downs and Oceanside scored again. This time it was Ripley scoring his 3rd touchdown of the game, on a 34 yard run. The 2 point conversion was no good and Oceanside led 28-16 with 6:19 left in the 4th Quarter.
MDI wasn't finished, as Baylor Landsman completed a pass to Hunter Gray, a 30 yard completion. The 2 point conversion was no good and Oceanside led 28-22 with 3:23 left in the game.
Then things became a little wacky. Ripley scored his 4th touchdown of the gamee, on a 32 yard run, the 2 point conversion was no good and Oceanside led 34-22. MDI scored on a 1 yard run by Joyce. Joyce ran in for the 2 point conversion and with 1.8 seconds left, Oceanside led 34-30.
MDI attempted an onside kick and then was a scrum when Zach Cody broke free and ran in for the touchdown kickoff return as time expired to give Oceanside the 40-30 victory.
MDI 0-1 will travel to Hampden on Friday, September 7th to play the Broncos. That game will be broadcast on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device with the pregame beginning at 6:40 PM.
Oceanside 1-0 will play host to Nokomis on Friday, September 7th at 7PM.
