MDI Downs Stearns 51-28 [PHOTOS]
The MDI Trojan Football Team defeated the Stearns Minutemen from Millinocket 51-28 in the first game of the 2019 season at Alumni Field in Bar Harbor.
Stearns won the toss and elected to receive, and the season couldn't have started more ominously for MDI, as Tyrone Davis fielded the opening kick-off at his own 15 yard line and ran the kick back 85 yards for a touchdown. The 2 point conversion was no good, and with 11:46 remaining in the 1st Quarter Stearns was up 6-0.
MDI received the kick and turned the ball over on downs. Stearns took over at their own 45 yard line, with 10:28 remaining and on their 1st play fumbled, with MDI recovering.
The Trojans took over at their own 48 yard line with 10:20 remaining in the 1st Quarter. They marched down the field and were in the end zone with Baylor Landsman completing a 29 yard pass to AJ Lozano. The drive took 1:59, and 7 plays. Alex Fernald kicked the point after, and the Trojans led 7-6
Stearns took over at their own 32 yard line and fumbled again, wiht MDI recovering. The Trojans had the ball at the Minutemen 32 yard line with 8:14 remaining in the 1st Quarter.
The Trojans again were able to put the ball in the end zone. The drive took 7 plays and 2:55. Sam Mitchell ran the ball in from the 10 yard line. The 2 point conversion was good, with Landsman running the ball in, and with 5:13 remaining in the 1st Quarter MDI was on top 15-6
Stearns returned the kick to the 30 yard line and were successful in moving the ball down the field, but ending up turning the ball over on downs, at the MDI 28 yard line with 11:53 remaining in the 1st Half.
Taking the ball at the 28, MDI needed 7 plays and 1:43 to score again. This time Mitchell ran in from 48 yards out. MDI lined up for the extra point, but it was a fake, with Landsman, the holder, running in for the 2 point conversion. With 10:10 left in the 1st Half, MDI was up 23-6.
Tyrone Davis had another excellent kick return, bringing the ball to the MDI 24 yard line. But the MDI defense stiffened and forced Stearns to turn the ball over on downs, with the Trojans taking over at their own 20 yard line with 7:29 remaining in the 1st Half.
MDI marched the ball up the field, and scored with Landsman completing a pass to Mitchell for 42 yards. The drive took 10 plays and 3:38. The 2 point conversion was good and MDI was up 31-6 with 3:41 remaining in the 1st Half.
MDI kicked off, and no one from Stearns went for the ball. MDI recovered the live ball on the Stearns 12 yard line. 4 plays later Landsman ran the ball in from 3 yards out for the touchdown. Landsman ran in for the 2 point conversion and with 2:06 remaining in the 1st Half, MDI was up 39-6.
Stearns scored with 18.8 seconds remaining in the 1st Half, as Elliot Shearer completed a pass to Bennett Dunstan for the touchdown. The 2 point conversion was good, and MDI led at the Half 39-14.
After another Stearns fumble, recovered by MDI, Mitchell ran in from 15 yards out on a 4 play drive. The 2 point conversion was no good and MDI led 45-14 with 8:43 remaining in the 3rd Quarter.
Stearns was forced to punt, and then MDI's Landsman was picked off. Stearns would score on a 9 yard touchdown pass from Shearer to Davis. The 2 point conversion failed and MDI led 45-20 with 3:04 remaining in the 3rd Quarter.
Stearns scored again in the 4th Quarter with 6:51 remaining. Gardner ran in from 3 yards out. Shearer ran in for the 2 point conversion and with 6:51 remaining , MDI led 45-28.
The Trojans scored the final touchdown of the game with 1:43 remaining, with Mitchell scoring from 17 yards out. That drive took 5:06.
MDI is 1-0 on the season and will play host to MCI on Friday, September 13 at 7PM at Alumni Field. That game will be broadcast beginning at 6:40 on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device.
