A man faces several charges upon being apprehended after a police chase in Hancock County on Sunday.

James Berube, 21, of Machias was charged with arson, burglary and aggravated assault.

The arrest follows suspicious fires early Sunday morning in Princeton and Indian Township that damaged three buildings.

Police said Berube broke into a home in Baileyville earlier in the day, tied up the woman home owner and stole her pickup truck. Berube was spotted driving the stolen pickup in Ellsworth. Officers began to pursue the stolen truck from Ellsworth into the Trenton, where the suspect fled the vehicle into the woods.

After a search, Berube was arrested at gunpoint Sunday evening at Dysart’s Moose Crossing store in Trenton. Police encountered him inside the store as he had stopped to buy a soda for himself.

Berube also faces charges related to the subsequent chase including failure to stop for an officer, eluding, and driving to endanger.

Berube was taken to Hancock County Jail.

Several agencies participated in the search including the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office the Mount Desert / Bar Harbor Police Department, Ellsworth PD, Marine Patrol, Maine Warden Service, Maine State Police, Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Maine Forest Service.
