Maine State Police Shut Down Parts of I-95 Due to Ice, Crashes

Maine State Police closed parts of I-95 due to icy road conditions that were causing drivers to crash, but they have been opened back up.

What's Causing the Issue?

Posts on the Maine State Police Facebook page report that black ice was an issue on the interstate Saturday, with multiple crashes between Bangor and Veazie. Speed limits have been reduced to 45 miles per hour and drivers are being urged to take it slow and use extreme caution, don't tailgate, and give themselves plenty of time to stop. Portions of the interstate that were closed to traffic have been reopened and traffic incidents cleared.

Were There a Lot of Crashes?

Maine State Police responded to approximately 8 crashes and slide-offs north of Waterville, beginning just after noon on Saturday. A tractor trailer jackknifed across two lanes and there was a rollover crash. All injuries were minor. Then, there were 12 more crashes in the Bangor area. One person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

As of 3:25 Saturday afternoon, the Maine Department of Transportation's 511 map was still showing the area closed to traffic. Updates will be posted on that map, as well as on the Maine State Police Facebook page.
