Author, Abolitionist and Mother Harriet Beecher Stowe Lived in Brunswick, Maine
You might remember learning about Harriet Beecher Stowe in school while studying the Underground Railroad and the Abolitionist Movement, both of which Stowe and her family were strong supporters of while fighting slavery.
It was a rented house in Brunswick, Maine where Stowe and her family hid many slaves while assisting them to freedom and safety. She also wrote her famous book, Uncle Tom's Cabin in this Maine home, which is now a National Historic Landmark, and rightfully so.
While writing novels and fighting the horrors of slavery, Harriet Beecher Stowe was also raising SEVEN children. This is certainly one powerful woman and mother that Maine is proud of.
This Mother from Cape Elizabeth, Maine is also an Olympic Gold Medalist
The 1984 Summer Olympic Games introduced women's marathon running for the first time, and the woman to win the gold was Maine's very own, Joan Benoit. Benoit also held the record for fastest recorded time for women at the Chicago and Boston marathons for decades.
Maine knows how special Benoit is and inducted her into the Maine Women's Hall of Fame. Joan Benoit currently resides in Freeport and is the mother of a son and daughter who both ran the Boston Marathon with her in 2014.
There's no running away from the fact that Benoit is one impressive Maine mother. Joan still competes to this day!
