I have to tell you, when I first saw this story I thought that perhaps it was from the Onion or some other satirical web publication. But alas, this came direct from the horse's mouth- that horse being the Kennebec Journal.

First of all, what happened to the old days where school lunches were a rotation of chicken burgers, cheese pizza and sloppy joes? What was so wrong about a diet high in carbs and MSG? We all turned out fine, didn't we?

Well apparently a lot has changed since we were in school. We're in a time now where school lunch menus have become far more diverse, and arguably healthier, than ever before. And, at least for some states, schools get funded for meals they purchase that support local businesses.

At this point, you're probably wondering what the hell kind of fish you saw on the photo that made you click into this article in the first place. Well, that homely-ass looking bottom-dweller is a monkfish. And yes, your kids are going to eat it.

According to Food Network,

Monkfish is known for its tight, meaty white flesh that is often compared to lobster meat. It's not only similar to lobster in texture, but also in flavor. It has a mild, sweet flavor without a trace of fishiness.

According to the KJ, the Maine Department of Education has given the greenlight to apply the Maine Local Foods Fund to schools that purchase monkfish stew from Maine Coast Munkfish Stew. The KJ reports that it is a partnership between the Maine Coast Fishermen's Association and Hurricane's Premium Soups and Chowders, both Maine businesses.

However, if you assume that the stew tastes like the fish looks (gross), that is apparently not the case. The KJ reports that the company has sent samples of the monkfish stew to several schools, including Whitefield, and that the response has been overwhelmingly positive. In fact, some schools report that students said they would eat it every day for lunch.

So I guess this is a classic case of never judge a book by its cover. However, if it were me, I'd say just give me the dino nuggies and soggy French fries. But then again, I'm obese.
