Taking a cruise is one of the best bang-for-your-buck vacations you can take.

Regardless of whether you are booked on a budget cruise line, or one of the higher-end cruise lines, you'll still have the opportunity to see live shows, partake in exotic excursions, all-inclusive dining, and more.

Since most passengers spend a lot of their time in the ship's many common areas, and only return to their cabins to sleep, the actual size of the stateroom does not matter too much to most people.

These days, even on the budget cruise lines, the cabins all have every amenity imaginable.  The only complaint anyone ever seems to have is a lack of electrical plugs.

The average American takes at least two devices with them on vacation.  Laptops, smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, etc.  All of these devices occasionally need to be charged.

That's where some cruise passengers may soon run into problems.

This Common Item is Now Banned on Many Cruise Ships

According to the Life Well Cruised website, extension cords and power strips are now banned by most cruise lines.

Well, to be more specific, power strips that have surge protection are now banned by cruise lines.  In most cases, power strips that do not have the surge protection feature are usable on board.

If you are caught with an extension cord or a power strip that is not in compliance with the cruise line's regulations, it will probably be confiscated and returned to you when you debark the ship.

Why are extension cords and power strips banned?  We have not been able to find a definitive reason listed on the websites of many popular cruise lines.  Most likely, it has to do with concerns about them causing a fire.

What kind of power strip should you get for your cabin?  Amazon sells a strip by a company called Nuozhi.  It has three grounded plugs, 3 USB 'A' ports, and a USB 'C' port.  The listing says that it is meant for cruise ships.  It's cheap, too.  Just about $12.

When in doubt, ask the cruise line or your travel agent. Ask your cruise line what their regulations are for power strips and extension cords.
