20 years ago, on November 15th 2001 "newspaper wars" came to Mount Desert Island, with the 1st publication of the Mount Desert Islander. 20 years later, the Islander continues to publish, while the Bar Harbor Times ceased publication in 2012.

According to Faith DeAmbrose the current editor, the Islander had planned to celebrate with a community celebration, but with COVID they have delayed that until sometime in the Spring.

In the 20th Anniversary issue, there will be a reflection from Earl Brechlin, the founding editor. There is also an interview with Alan Baker, the original owner. There's a centerspread with a collage of some of the best photos over the 20 years and a tribute to advertisers who have been in the Islander for 20 years, since Day 1.

In the 20 years, there have only been 3 editors - Brechlin, Liz Graves who is the current Town Clerk of Bar Harbor and DeAmbrose.
