August is quickly coming to an end. The fall sports season begins on  Monday August 19th! We continue to try and keep a list of FREE, family friendly, events that are going on in the Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island area, which will be published weekly on the WDEA website. Here is our list for the week August 19-24

While this is not a comprehensive list, it's what I have been able to find by talking to the Chambers of Commerce, Public Libraries and events that I'm generally aware of. If you would like to have your FREE event listed, please email it to me in advance at chris.popper@townsquaremedia.com

Monday August 19th
Northeast Harbor - 10:30AM Northeast Harbor Public Library - Stories of the Night Sky - Journey into the night sky with imaginative stories from many cultures around the globe with storyteller Hope Lewis.

Southwest Harbor - 2-4PM Southwest Harbor Public Library - General Tech Help - Get help with basic computer tasks such as setting up an email account, transferring photos, completing online forms, attaching photos to emails, scanning documents, creating and using documents in Word, Excel, Access, Google Drive, etc. Laptop users are encouraged to bring their own computer. Hardware and maintenance issues on private computers are beyond the scope of this assistance. **Registration recommended for a one-on-one half hour session, or drop in with the chance that you may have to wait until our volunteer is available

Bar Harbor - Town Band Concert 8PM Bandstand - Village Green (Lasts 1 hour)

Tuesday August 20th
Bar Harbor - 4-7PM. Free Community Meal with entertainment. Prepared by Open Table MDI. Served at Bar Harbor Congregational Church on Mount Desert Street.

Southwest Harbor- 5:30-7PM Southwest Harbor Public Library - Author Talk with Earl Brechlin - "Return to Moose River, In Search of the Spirit of the Great North Woods” Talk by Earl Brechlin Author and Registered Maine Guide Earl Brechlin will read from his new collection of essays about Maine’s iconic landscapes, the power family and the search for meaning and renewal in the embrace of wilderness. Brechlin will also share slides of Maine’s outdoor heritage. Attendees are encouraged to share their stories of great adventures in the Maine woods.

Wednesday August 21st
Southwest Harbor -10AM-10:45AM Southwest Harbor Public Library Toddler Storytime Sing-A-Long with Paul Kaplan. (Designed ages 3-5 but all welcome.)

Ellsworth - 10AM - 11:30 Ellsworth Public Library - Summer of LEGO - The weekly summer LEGO group is back! Children 3 and up are welcome to attend. Children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult. They will have large LEGO bricks for the little builders and the regular bricks for everyone else. Not sure what to build? They’ll be offering weekly space-themed challenges!

Ellsworth- 3-7PM First Congregational Church - Welcome Table. All community members are invited to a free meal in the dining hall. Enter the Church Street door located diagonally across from the Ellsworth Police Station. 2 Church Street, Ellsworth

Northeast Harbor - 5:30 Northeast Harbor Public Library - Author Visit with Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Tom Kelley - "The Siren's Call and Second Chances"

Ellsworth - 6PM Ellsworth Public Library. - Summertime Delights - "The Human Variety Show" with Steve Corning - Dubbed as “The Human Variety Show,” Showtime Steve is a one-of-a-kind variety performer, harnessing his signature off-the-cuff comedy and show-stopping stunts to create a high-energy show unlike any other! Audiences across the US and beyond have seen Steve juggle everything from shoes and car-keys, to machetes and balloons, as well as re-create a 100-year-old Houdini rope escape, fit his entire body through a folding chair, manipulate LED light props in the dark, and balance a ladder (and other dangerous items) on his chin. All this mixed with a healthy dose of physical comedy and audience participation makes this show an ​unforgettable experience for the whole family!

Ellsworth - 10:30-11:30 - Ellsworth Public Library - Storytime and Craft.Join Miss Keli for stories, songs, and crafts! Recommended for kids ages 2-3 and their caregivers.

Southwest Harbor - 1:30-2:30 PM Southwest Harbor Public Library - Apple Tech Help - Free assistance for Apple Laptops and devices. *Pre-registration is required. Call to make an appointment for a half hour session. (207) 244-7065

Northeast Harbor 5:30 PM - Northeast Harbor Public Library -Duo Criquet: 2 Violins - Heather Thomas and James McFadden-Talbot

Ellsworth - 6PM Ellsworth Public Library - The Ellsworth Chess Club meets every Thursday evening at the Ellsworth Public Library. New members are welcome.

Ellsworth 6-7PM - Ellsworth Public Library - Author Visit - Kristen Britain - Local author Kristen Britain will be there with her latest book The Dream Gatherer, released in October 2018. This novella “little book” celebrates the 20th anniversary of the publication of Green Rider. Books will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of The Briar Patch.

Ellsworth - Free Movie in Knowlton Park at Sunset (Approximately 7:38 PM) "Dumbo" Holt was once a circus star, but he went off to war and when he returned it had terribly altered him. Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) hires him to take care of Dumbo, a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him the laughing stock of the struggling circus troupe. But when Holt’s children discover that Dumbo can fly, silver-tongued entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), and aerial artist Colette Marchant (Eva Green) swoop in to make the little elephant a star. (This is the last movie of the summer series)

Friday August 23rd
Southwest Harbor - 10AM-11AM Southwest Harbor Public Library - Baby Storytime Susan Michalski and Amanda Crafts welcome babies with songs, rhymes, and short stories. Baby Storytime is designed especially for babies under two years. Siblings are welcome

Ellsworth - 2 - 3 PM Ellsworth Public Library - Astronaut Academy -  Astronauts in training will get a chance to taste test space food, participate in physical activities, make rockets, “moon” rocks and lots of other fun things.

Ellsworth - Waterfront Concert Series at Ellsworth's Union River Harbor Park 6PM- "The Crown Vics" The Crown Vics - East Coast Boogie, Billy and Rock’n’Roll! Ever since they first formed, The Crown Vics made it their mission to veer from genre to genre across the musical map, choosing to follow their own muse. Mixing musical mischief and fun is in the Vic's DNA and they are already well known for their “let’s tear it up” reputation. While that status is well deserved, their ability to bend the boundaries has been simultaneously tempered and informed by an adherence to time-honored, vanishing musical traditions, grounded in honky tonk, boogie woogie and rock'n'roll. (This is the final Waterfront Concert Series of the Summer)

Bar Harbor - 7- 8 PM - MDI YWCA - Photo Workshops with Mike Leonard sponsored by the Bar Harbor Whale Watch. Learn to instantly take better photos on your camera and cell phone with Mike Leonard of “Photo Tourism by Mike.” Bring along a camera for this hands-on workshop and Leonard will walk attendees through the easy changes they can make instantly to take better photos. Each session will break down things that are seen as difficult photography concepts and attendees will leave the session knowing much more about how to use their camera. He will talk about exposure, white balance, using the HDR setting, basic composition and more. Leonard will also highlight free apps that everyone can download on their cell phone to improve images on the phone as well.

Saturday August 24th
Ellsworth - 9AM-9:45 AM - Ellsworth Public Library - Baby Story and Play - Join Miss Cheryl for a story and sing some favorite songs followed by informal playtime. A great opportunity for parents to connect and the kids to play! Recommended for children 3 and under and their caregivers.

Southwest Harbor 6:30-9:30 PM American Legion Hall 22 Village Green Way - Contra Dance with Big Moose Band. Get out your dancing shoes and join the great musicians of the Big Moose Band and caller Mike Fay! The evening begins at 6:30 with with a free dance where you can learn the steps and brush up on your contra dance skills. This is a great time for families to try contra-dancing. From 7:30 on there is an $8 requested donation per person or $25 per family to help pay the caller. Children younger than 12 dance for free.

Ellsworth - Knowlton Park's Splash Pad is the place to cool off in Ellsworth!

The restroom facilities are open from 8AM to 9 PM. The changing rooms at Knowlton Park are open as well. Water in the Splash Pad will operate between 10AM and 8PM, everyday, unless the temperature falls below 65, which it will then automatically shut off until the temperature rises again.

Looking for somewhere that's kid friendly and FREE in Bar Harbor to cool off? The place to go is the Glen Mary Wading Pool! The Pool has a maximum depth of 2 feet and is open daily from 10AM to 8 PM. There is no lifeguard on duty, and children under 10 need to be accompanied by someone 14 and over. Pets are not allowed in the fenced in area. Food and beverage is allowed but not in the water. There are changing facilities

The Glen Mary Wading Pool is located at 11 Waldren Road. The easiest way to get there is to go on Park Street and go past the YMCA and cross Ledgelawn Avenue. At the end of the road turn right onto Glen Mary Road. At the end of the road turn left onto Waldren Road.
