You shouldn't be texting and driving, or talking on your cellphone with the phone to your ear while you are driving. You should be concentrating while driving! You owe it to your self, your passengers and your fellow drivers. And we hope that the person driving next to us, or driving in the opposite lane heading towards us is paying attention too!

The Ellsworth Police Department in a post on their Facebook Page is letting the community know they will be stepping up enforcement against distracted driving April 10th to the 14th. They will have targeted details watching our for violations.

Now before someone complains that we are "tipping off offenders", this is similar to when the Ellsworth Police Department warns about special OUI details. We want everyone to be safe, not just these 5 days, but everyday. And the fines for driving while distracted can be pretty high!  In Maine, texting while driving incurs a minimum fine of $250 for a 1st offense, and a minimum fine of $500 for 2nd or subsequent offenses within a 3-year period, potentially leading to a license suspension. And I don't know about you, but I don't have a spare $250!
