Ellsworth Girls Tame a Tough Lions Team

The Ellsworth Girls Basketball Team had to battle complacency and a tough Belfast Lions Team on Saturday, but persevered, beating Belfast 56-47 Saturday afternoon January 12th.

After beating MDI for the 1st time since 2004, one could understand if the Eagles were looking past Belfast and looking forward to Old Town.

In the 1st Quarter Ellsworth jumped out to a 13-6 lead. Sara Shea had 5 points with a 3-pointer, Sierra Andrews had 4 point, Trinity Montigny drained a 3-pointer and Kayla Duhaime was 1-2 from the free throw line. For Belfast Grace Fitzjurls had 3 points, Kiara Doolan 2 points and Lillie Mitchell was 1-2 from the free throw line.

In the 2nd Quarter Belfast outscored Ellsworth 25-16 to take a 31-29 lead at the end of the 1st Half. Belfast started the 2nd Quarter on a 8-0 run. In the 2nd Quarter Doolan, and Mitchell each had 8 points, Fitzjurls 7 points and Madison Farris 4 points. Ellsworth ended the Quarter with 3 3's , 2 by Samantha Carter and 1 by Montigny. In the 2nd Quarter, Montigny had 8 points including 2 3's, Carter 6 points with the 2 3's and Andrews 2 points.

In the 3rd Quarter Ellsworth regained the lead, 41-39. Montigny had 6 points, and Shea and Carter each had a 3-pointer. Belfast received 4 points from Fitzjurls, and 2 from Farris.

In the 4th Quarter Ellsworth outscored Belfast 15-8 to ice the victory. Montigny had 8 points with her 4th 3-pointer of the afternoon. Carter had 5 points wth her 4th 3-pointer. Samantha Higgins had a huge 2 points. For Belfast Fitzjurls scored all of the Lions' 8 points.

Ellsworth was led by Trinity Montigny with a game high 25 points, while Samantha Carter had 14 points. Ellsworth hit 10 3's and were 6-10 from the free throw line.

Belfast was led by Grace Fitzjurls with 22 points while Lillie Mitchell had 11 points. The Lions were 13-19 from the free throw line.

Ellsworth is now 9-2 and will play host to Old Town who beat Ellsworth 50-30 back on December 12th. Tipoff is at 7PM.

Belfast is 0-11 and play host to Ersking Academy on Thursday, January 17th at 6:30PM.
