Battle of the Lakes: Which Maine Lake is the Best Vacation Spot?
It's that time of year again... summah vacation time! Most Mainers are either "beach people" or "lake people." We have a million beautiful beaches along the Maine cost, but we have terrific lakes throughout the state too.
Here's a list of some of Vacationland's most famous (and stunningly beautiful) lakes. Which ones are your favorites?
Moosehead Lake
Maine's most famous lake destination, and for wicked good reason. Not only is Moosehead the biggest lake in Maine and New England, it's also the biggest landlocked lake east of the Mississippi River in the entire United States.
Sebago Lake
One of Maine's two most famous lakes, Sebago's location in Southern Maine makes it a wicked popular (and busy!) place to spend some time in the sun.
Rangeley Lake
Famous as a resort lake from a bygone era, Rangeley lake and the town of Rangeley are still a wicked popular summer destination for both Mainers and people "from away."
Mooselookmeguntic Lake
The bigger sister to Rangeley Lake, Mooselookmeguntic has a great name, and it's the fourth-largest lake in Maine.
Schoodic Lake
Schoodic Lake is a deep Maine lake in Piscataquis County, with great salmon fishing.
Chamberlain Lake
Chamberlain Lake is one of the largest and deepest lakes in the North Maine Woods, with stunning views of Mt. Katahdin.
Belgrade Lakes / Great Pond
The Belgrade Lakes are a chain of lakes around Belgrade. They flow from East Pond to North Pond, then to Great Pond, Long Pond, Messalonskee Lake, and finally to the Messalonskee Stream, which drains to the Kennebec River in Waterville. So many lakes!
Long Lake / Brandy Pond
Long Lake is an eleven mile lake in the towns of Naples, Maine, Bridgton, Maine and Harrison. It was created by receding glaciers, and has many coves and rocks.
