April Fool’s Day

April Fool's Day is tomorrow. There are two great memories I have of April Fool's Day when my children were little, and one that backfired on me when I tried to pull one on my wife!

My children had the same kindergarten teacher, Jan Breyer at Abraham Lincoln School, and she pulled the same joke for years on her unsuspecting students :) When they arrived on April Fool's Day, and had hung up their coats, put away their backpacks etc. she would look up from her desk and ask the children what they were doing there? "Coming to school" they would answer. Mrs. Breyer would then tell them there was no school for kindergarten students, and they were to put on their coats, get their backpacks and she would take them back to the bus. When everyone was outside, Mrs. Breyer would tell them "April Fool's!" and take them back inside :)

One year, I woke my children up at the normal time probably around 6:30, and told them we had all overslept, and that we had to leave in 5 minutes to get to school on time. I must have sounded like a drill instructor yelling at them to hurry up! I think they got dressed and were downstairs at the kitchen table within 5 minutes. I had breakfast waiting for them and was telling them to eat quickly. When they started gobbling their food, I told them April Fool!  I started cracking up, they weren't impressed! But they had plenty of time to watch TV before they went to school :)

Then of course, there was the April Fool's joke that I tried to play on my wife, and it backfired on me. My wife is a teacher, and this must have happened 28 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. The weather was crumby, a typical Sprinter Day. I told her that there was no school for her that day. When she said "Really?" in a hopeful voice, I crushed her dreams with a "No! April Fool's!" She then gave me a look that made me want to crawl up and die! I knew, that I should never joke about a No School Day EVER, EVER, and I mean EVER again! To this day, when my wife says "Really?" I remind her that I would never joke about that again!
