Stabbing Near Popular Bar Nets Aggravated Assault Charge
Two men have different versions of what happened Monday morning near a popular nightspot. Police say one man ended up with a stab wound, and the other is facing charges.
Bangor Police were called to a reported stabbing near 16 Union Street, in the vicinity of Carolina Sports & Spirits, at around 1 a.m., according to a news release. After an investigation involving two cruisers and the criminal investigations division, 19-year-old Devin Peirce of Bangor was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault.
Sergeant Tim Cotton said the victim was approached by Peirce while he was smoking with friends outside. Police believe the victim didn't know the suspect. A scuffle ensued and then the 38-year-old victim, who thought he'd merely been punched, ran after Peirce. When he realized he'd been stabbed, he went to the hospital and was treated and released.
Sometime later, Peirce went to the police station with a slightly different version of what happened. The investigators determined that Peirce was the aggressor and placed him under arrest. Peirce was slightly injured during his attempt to run away from the victim. Cotton says it's believed he fell and cut his finger on his own knife.
