The #10 seeded Erskine Academy Eagles upset the #1 seeded Ellsworth Eagles 2-1 on Wednesday evening, November 4th in Ellsworth to win the Class B Northern Maine Championship and advance to play in the State Championship on Saturday, November 7th at 5:30 PM at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Erskine took a 1-0 lead with 35:47 remaining in the 1st Half. Josh Reed, who takes the free throws for Erskine Academy threw the ball into the box and Trevor Hubbard shot the ball at Ellsworth goalkeeper Bruce St. Peter. St. Peter made the initial save, but Hubbard shot the ball on the ground to St. Peter's left, and the Erskine Academy Eagles led 1-0.

Erskine Academy added an insurance goal with 16:25 remaining in the 2nd Half when Ellsworth was unable to clear the ball and Luke Peabody scored from the right side, making the score 2-0.

Ellsworth was able to cut the deficit in half, when they were awarded a penalty kick. Colby Clarke drove the ball low and to the right, past the dive of Erskine Academy goalie Denver Cullivan. With 12:14 remaining in the game, the score was 2-1.

Ellsworth had a few opportunities in the final minutes, but Erskine Academy's defense was up to the task, and Erskine Academy shocked Ellsworth 2-1.

It's been a Cinderella run for the #10 seeded Erskine Academy Eagles. They beat #7 MDI in the prelims, #2 Winslow Black Raiders in the Quarterfinals, the #3 seeded Presque Isle Wildcats in the Semifinals and now the #1 seeded Ellsworth Eagles in the Northern Maine Finals.

Ellsworth had 15 shots on goal, while Erskine Academy ended up with 14 shots. Ellsworth goalie Bruce St. Peter had 3 saves while Erskine Academy Denver Cullivan had 6 saves.

Both teams should be congratulated on the exceptionally clean game, and the level of sportsmanship displayed throughout the contest.
