Chief Jim Willis has submitted his letter of resignation to Durlin Lunt the Town Manager for Mount Desert and to Sarah Gilbert the Acting Town Manager in Bar Harbor. The letter was dated July 17th.

Chief Willis' last day will be on August 4, 2023. He has accepted a position with Dirigo Safety LLC and is being assigned to the Maine Bureau of Safety.

Dirigo Safety, according to their website provides the highest quality services and training for police, dispatch, fire, ems and public safety personnel.

According to an email from Town Manager Lunt, "Under the police sharing agreement Captain Kerns becomes the acting chief of police until a permanent chief is selected.”

Willis  has spent 9years as the shared police chief for Bar Harbor and Mount Desert., He has spent 19 years at the Town of Mount Desert, a period that included him serving as acting town manager from 2006-2009.
