Trojans Begin Defense of Gold Ball with 71-48 Victory in Old Town [Recap/Stats/Photos]

The MDI Trojans began the defense of their Class B State Title on Saturday, December 9th with an impressive 71-48 victory over the Old Town Coyotes in Old Town. MDI was led by Derek Collin who had a game high 25 points.

MDI jumped out to a 21-14 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter. Derek Collin had 7 points including a 3-pointer. Andrew Phelps and Owen Mild each had 4 points, Colby Lee had a 3-pointer and Finn McConomy drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer for MDI. For Old Town, Travis Spell had 4 points, Jacob Cyr and Logan Doucette each had a 3-pointer and Nicholas Swift and Ethan Hayes each had a basket.

MDI was out scored 11-10 in the 2nd Quarter but led at the end of the 1st Half 31-25. Old Town was led by Swift with a 3-pointer and Spell, Kyle Berube, Cyr and Doucette each chipped in with 2 points. For MDI Drew Shea had 5 points, McConomy swished another 3-pointer and Collin added 2 points.

In the 3rd Quarter, the Trojans played inspired offense and defense outscoring Old Town 21-15 to take a 52-40 lead. Collin had 9 points, Andrew Phelps and McConomy each had 5 points including a 3-pointer each and Colby Lee had 2 points. For the Coyotes Logan Doucette had 2 3-pointers for 6 points. Jacob Cyr had 5 points with a 3-pointer. Spell and Hayes added 2 points apiece.

In the 4th Quarter for MDI Erik Merchant scored his first varsity points going 2-2 from the free throw line while Brett Duley scored his first varsity points going 1-2 from the free throw line. Derek Collin had 7 points, Drew Shea had 5 points, Owen Mild had 3 points and Colby Lee had 1 point for MDI. For Old Town Shawn Hoogterp scored his first varsity points, a 3-pointer, while Kyle Berube and Logan Doucette each had 2 points and Dom Mitchell had 1 point.

MDI was led by Derek Collin with a game high 25 points while Finn McConomy had 11 points and Drew Shea had 10 points. McConomy had 3 3-pointers, Andrew Phelps, Colby Lee and Derek Collin each had a 3-pointer. MDI went 17-27 from the free throw line.

Old Town was led by Logan Doucette with 13 points while Jacob Cyr had 10 points. Doucette had 3 3-pointers, Cyr had 2 3-pointers and Shawn Hoogterp and Nick Swift each had a 3-pointer. Old Town was 9-10 from the free throw line.

MDI now 1-0 will play host to Foxcroft Academy on Tuesday, December 12th at 7 PM in a game that will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA, on WDEA Internet Radio. The game may also be heard on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device. The pregame will start at 6:40 PM.
