This strange winter weather continues to take it's toll, as one of the most popular ice fishing derbies in the area has been postponed.

After a discussion with a biologist for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the organizers of the G&M Family Market Hancock County Ice Fishing Derby have decided to postpone it until February 20th-21st due to inferior and somewhat dangerous ice conditions.  The Derby had been scheduled for this coming weekend. Normally, 500 to 600 ice fishermen take part in the event.

Greg Hawes, the organizer of the event told the Bangor Daily News, "By holding the derby, I feel that we [would be] saying that we think it’s safe enough to go out and fish, and we [would be] encouraging you to come in and buy as many tickets as you can and go out and fish. That’s the last thing I want to do when it is not safe out there.”

All tickets purchased for this weekend's Derby will be honored in February.  Keep an eye on the Hancock County Ice Fishing Derby's Facebook page for upcoming information.
