On Tuesday, September 1, the RSU 24 Board of Directors voted unanimously to suspend interscholastic athletics for its students for the fall sports season. On Labor Day, September 7th a day before school was supposed to start, approximately 65 student-athletes and their parents rallied on the grounds of Sumner Memorial High School in East Sullivan, hoping the Board of Directors would reconsider their vote and let them play.

The Maine Principal's Association is negotiating with the State of Maine in the hopes of coming up with acceptable guidelines so the interscholastic season may begin. A decision is expected to be announced this week. Sumner's athletes hope that if the MPA can come up with a framework that will allow soccer, cross country, cheering, golf, sailing and football that they'll have the opportunity to participate.

Last year the Sumner Boy's Soccer Team was the number 1 seed finishing the regular season with a 13-0-1 record while the Girl's Soccer team just missed qualifying for the playoffs with a 5-9 record.
