A day after allowing 5 home runs to the Blue Jays, the Red Sox were torched for 8 home runs and the Red Sox lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 18-4 on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Things were so bad that the Red Sox had position players, Marwin Gonzalez and Christian Arroyo pitch the 8th and 9th innings to try and spare the bullpen.

Martin Perez coming off a bad start blistered, lasting just 1.1 innings and allowing 6 hits and 5 runs. 3 of the 6 hits were home runs. He didn't strike out a batter and walked 1.

Ryan Weber who was recalled from Worcester when the club designated Brandon Brennan for assignment was dreadful. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 13 hits and 11 runs. He surrendered 4 home runs while striking out 7 and walking 2.

Marwin Gonzalez pitched a scoreless 8th inning while Christian Arroyo gave up 2 runs in the 9th.

Xander Bogaerts was 1-3 with his 12th home run. He had missed the last 2 games with left knee soreness

Bobby Dalbec hit his 8th homer in the 7th inning.

For Toronto Teoscar Hernandez was 3-6 with a double and 2 home runs, driving in 6 runs.

Bo Bichette was 4-5, scoring 5 runs. He doubled, homered and drove in 3 runs.

Vladamir Guerrero Jr. was 3-5 with a home run and drove in 3 runs.

Marcus Semien was 2-4 with a home run and 2 runs batted in.

Cavan Biggio was 2-4 with a home run.

The Tampa Bay Rays beat Baltimore 7-1 and Boston is now 3.0 games back in 2nd place.

Boston and Toronto will play the final game of the 4 game series Monday night with the pregame starting at 6:10 and first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1370 WDEA
