The Boston Red Sox fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 on Friday night at Fenway, snapping their 4-game winning streak, as rookie Payton Tolle made his major league debut for the Red Sox.

In a surprising move prior to the game the Red Sox released Walker Buehler to make room for Tolle on the major league roster. Buehler struggled for the Red Sox this season/ He had a 5.45 ERA (68 ER/112.1 IP) in 23 games (22 starts) for the Red Sox this season

Tolle pitched well. He went 5.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, striking out 8 and walking 2. He became the 1st Red Sox pitcher to record 8 or more strikeouts in their major league debut since Daisuke Matsuzaka on April 5, 2007.

Greg Weissert took the loss and is 6-5. He allowed 2 hits and 1 run, getting the final 2 outs in the 6th inning.

Roman Anthony, was 2-4 with a solo home run, his 8th of the season.

Romy Gonzalez was 3-4.

Ceddanne Rafaela was 2-4.

Boston was 1-7 with runners in scoring position and left 7 runners on base.

The Red Sox are now 75-61. They are in 3rd place in the AL East, 3.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays, and a half game behind the New York Yankees. They are in 2nd place in the Wild Card.

Boston and Pittsburgh will play the middle game of the 3-game series on Saturday afternoon with the pregame starting at 3:10 on WDEA AM 1370.
