The Boston Red Sox fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-3 on Sunday, August 16th in a game that was delayed 2 1/2 hours because of a rain delay.

The day didn't start on a good note, as the Red Sox placed Masataka Yoshida on the 10-Day injured list with a left hamstring strain and Justin Slaten on the 15-Day Injured List (retroactive to August 13) with right elbow inflammation. Boston recalled Mickey Gaspar and Burgos from Triple A Worcester.

Pablo Sandoval started for the Red Sox on the mound, and lasted just 4.0 innings. He allowed 9 hits and 7 runs, striking out 6 and walking 3. Burgos pitched the final 4.0 innings allowing 2 hits and 1 run. He struck out and walked 1. '

Boston was outhit 11-5.

The Red Sox' lone run came on a Connor Wong 3-run homer in the 5th inning. It was his 4th of the season. Wong ended up with 2 of Boston's hits.

Anthony Seigler had a double.

The Red Sox played without Willson Contreras who had a scheduled rest day.

Boston returns to Fenway Park for a 6-game homestand. They take on the Arizona Diamondbacks August 17-19 and the San Francisco Giants August 21-23.
