The Red Sox jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 3rd inning, but the San Diego Padres scored 3 runs in the 4th and 3 in the 5th innings and beat Boston 8-6 on Sunday afternoon. They are 2-7 to start the season, their worst start since 2019.

Ranger Suarez was cruising on the mound, facing the minimum through his 1st 10 batters before allowing 6 of his next 8 to reach base. He ended up pitching 4.0 innings and allowing 6 hits and 4 runs, striking out 2 and walking 2.

Greg Weissert came on in relief and allowing 2 runs on 2 hits in an inning.

Tyler Urbestine making his major league debut took the loss. He went 2.2 innings allowing 3 hits, striking out 2 and walking 1. He held San Diego scoreless in the 6th and 7th innings before allowing a leadoff solo homer in the 8th inning.

Danny Coulombe retired the final batter in the 8th inning and Zack Kelly allowed an insurance run in the 9th inning, allowing a hit.

Masataka Yoshida was 3-4 for the Red Sox ant the plate with a pair of doubles and 3 runs batted in.

Wilyer Abreu was 3-4 with a single, double and triple, driving in a run.

Jarren Duran was 1-5 with a double, driving in 2 runs.

Corbin Durbin was 0-3 and is now hitting .071. Trevor Story was 1-5 and is hitting .119
