Motorists traveling on Route 15 in Deer Isle were met with a noose thrown over the telephone wires on Juneteenth, June 19, the day that commemorates Union army general Gordon Granger's reading of federal orders in the city of Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, proclaiming that all enslaved persons in the Texas were now free.

The noose was removed Saturday morning.
