Police say there is no threat to the community after a white powdery substance was found inside a banker's bag at the Mount Desert Municipal Building on Tuesday.

Mount Desert Fire, Police, and Northeast Harbor Ambulance responded to the municipal building for a report of the unknown substance located in banker’s bag at about 2 p.m.

Only one person was reported to have been exposed to the unknown substance and that person is not having any adverse effects from the exposure, police said.

The building was evacuated as a precaution during the investigation, and a HazMat unit is responding to assist in identifying the substance.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police determined the town has been in possession of the bag for several weeks and this was an isolated incident. There is no threat to the public or community.

Police also want to relay this is completely unrelated to COVID 19 virus.
