MDI Sinks Mariners 62-48 [STATS/RECAP/PHOTOS]
The MDI Trojans Boys Basketball Team beat the Oceanside Mariners 62-48 Friday, December 15th in Rockland in a key early season game. MDI trailed by a single point twice before pulling away in the second half. The 2 teams will play again on Saturday, January 6th at 5 PM in Bar Harbor
MDI led 12-10 in the 1st Quarter. Andrew Phelps had 4 points, Finn McConomy, Derek Collin, Drew Shea and Owen Mild each scored 2 points for the Trojans. For Oceanside, Jack Lombardo had 5 points including a 3-pointer, Michael Norton Jr. coming off the bench had 4 points and Cooper Wirkala had 1 point.
In the 2nd Quarter, MDI put Oceanside to the free throw line 10 times, and the Mariners sank 7 of them, with Wirkala going 6-6 and scoring 9 points with a 3-pointer. Norton Jr. had 4 points, Jack Freeman had a 2-pointer and Leo Reid was 1-2 from the free throw line. For MDI Drew Shea had 6 points including a 3-pointer, and McConomy, Collin, Dane Vanzura, Eli Parady and Mild each had 2 points. Those were Parady's and Vanzura's first varsity points. At the Half, MDI led 28-27.
In the 3rd Quarter, MDI stopped fouling, and Oceanside only went to the line 5 times, going 3-5. Meanwhile MDI's defense clamped down, as the Trojans outscored the Mariners 11 to 5. Phelps had 3 points for MDI, with Brett Duley, Colby Lee, Collin and Mild each adding 2 points. For Oceanside Norton Jr had 3 points and Amos Anderson was 1-2 from the free throw line.
In the 4th Quarter, MDI increased their lead to 14 points before Norton Jr. dunked and Wirkala had a 3-pointer, but the Trojans hit their free throws, going 11-14 in the 4th Quarter. For MDI Phelps had 8 points going 5-6 from the line. Mild had 5 points going 3-4 from the free throw line while McConomy was 4-4 from the free throw line. Duley, Lee and Collin each added a basket for the Trojans. For Oceanside, Wirkala had 2 3-points for 6 points, Norton Jr. had 4 points, Trevor Reed and Lomardo each had a 3-pointer. The Mariners were 0-1 from the free throw line.
MDI was led by Andrew Phelps with 15 points, Owen Mild had 11 points and Finn McConomy, Drew Shea and Derek Collin each had 8 points. The Trojans were 15-24 from the free throw line.
Oceanside was led by Cooper Wirkala and Michael Norton Jr. with 16 points each. The Mariners were 11-18 from the free throw line.
MDI now 2-0 is back in action Saturday night, December 16th at 7PM when they host Foxcroft Academy in a game that has been rescheduled from earlier this week.
Oceanside 1-1 will host Camden Hills on Tuesday December 19th at 6:30 PM.
