MDI High School’s Kasey Jordan Earns Silver Award with Girl Scouts of America
Congratulations to MDI High School's Kasey Jordan who earned the Silver Award with the Girls Scouts of America. The Silver Award is the 2nd Highest Award offered. She earned her Bronze Award while she was a Junior Scout and has just earned her Silver Award as a Cadette.
For her project, Jordan, a former student at Trenton Elementary School, presented the school with the Vertical Hydroponic Garden she built. Building the Hydroponic Garden was her project for her Silver Award.
Kasey chose this project for her Silver Award to address the need of improving the availability of nutritious food options for her former classmates. 56 percent of the Trenton students are eligible for low income or on reduced lunch plans. Since Maine winters prevent a yearly outdoor garden, she decided to bring the gardens indoors.
To accomplish her task, Jordan worked with a German Engineer to build a well-made tower system. With limited space to house the 14-foot wide tower system, Mr. Ziboray and Kasey agreed to make the first tower system 5-feet wide. Each tower has a place for 6 plants and there are 8 towers. Kasey is hoping to build additional systems for the school so they can expand the program: putting fresh vegetables in their backpack.
Kasey organized several fundraising events to purchase supplies , including a Community Dinner, T-Shirt, Mums and Herb sale to name a few. Thanks to additional donations from family, friends and several businesses, the Towers were built and are currently housing 48 plants.
Jordan wanted to give the school one last gift of thanks for giving her so much joy before she went on to MDI High School. Kasey’s next big challenge will be to work towards the highest award from Girls Scouts, the Gold Award
Kasey shares that if you want to make a good impact on the world to go for it and never give up. She hopes that her project will inspire other to try something new
