MDI Girls Soccer Shuts Out GSA 5-0 [PHOTOS]

The MDI Girls Soccer Team won their 1st game of the season, defeating George Stevens Academy 5-0 at Alumni Field under the lights on Monday, October 19th.

Lelia Weir started the scoring for MDI with just 1:56 elapsed scoring with 38:04 left in the 1st Half.

Weir then made it 2-0 with a blast from around 35 yards out, that just flew in under the crossbar.

The 1st Half ended with MDI up 2-0, and the Trojans outshot the Eagles 18-4.

In the 2nd Half, Sabine Costello-Sanders who normally plays goal, went into midfield. That move paid off, as Costello-Sanders, one of the tri-captains scored off a rebound with the assist going to Gaia Daul with 28:11 remaining in the game.

Emma Freudig, another tri-captain, scored with 7:26 remaining off a rebound of a shot by Weir, the 3rd tri-captain.

Freudig, scored the final goal of the night, with 1:42 remaining, on a header off of a corner kick by Weir.

MDI ended with 40 shots on net, while GSA had 6. Haley Leonardi started in net for MDI with Costello-Sanders replacing her late in the 2nd Half. Jenna Blodgett was in net for GSA

MDI was scheduled to play Searsport on Wednesday, October 21st at 4:30, but because of the COVID-19 breakout in Waldo County, that game has been cancelled. The Trojans are next back in action on Friday, October 23rd when they will play Ellsworth at Del Luce Stadium at 5:45 p.m. That game will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA, on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device.
