MDI Girls Basketball Nips Ellworth 40-39 [PHOTOS/STATS]

The MDI Girls Basketball Team needed a free throw with 3.8 seconds left in the game to escape with a 40-39 win over the Ellsworth Eagles at Katsiaficas Gymnasium in Ellsworth on Tuesday night, January 26, 2021.

Ellsworth led 4-2 at the end of the 1st Quarter. Autumn Paul had 2 points and Jocelyn Jordan was 2-2 from the free throw line for the Eagles. For MDI Mollie Gray and Grace Witham were each 1-2 from the free throw line.

In the 2nd Quarter MDI outscored Ellsworth 14-11, taking the lead with 4:58 left in the Half, and led 16-15 at the end of the Half. Leah Carroll had 11 points for MDI with 2 3-pointers. Mollie Gray had 3 points. For Ellsworth Kylie Robidoux scored back to back baskets to end the quarter and had 4 points. Samantha Higgins had a 3-pointer and Samantha Carter had 2 points.

In the 3rd Quarter MDI outscored Ellsworth 17-11 to take a 33-26 lead. Leah Carroll had 7 points, along with her 3rd 3-pointer of the night. Elena Alderman had  points and Olivia Gray and Mollie Gray were each 2-2 from the free throw line. For Ellsworth Autumn Paul had 5 points including her first ever 3-pointer!  Morgan Clifford had a 3-pointer, Sierra Andrews 2 points and Samantha Carter was 1-2 from the free throw line.

MDI was 3-7 from the free throw line but Leah Carroll hit the winning free throw with 3.8 seconds left. She had 3 points in the quarter, while Olivia Gray had 3 points including going 2-3 from the free throw line. For Ellsworth Jocelyn Jordan had 5 points before fouling out. Autumn Paul had 4 points and Ella Hubbard and Sierra Andrews each had 2 points.

MDI was led by Leah Carroll with a game high 21 points. Olivia Gray and Mollie Gray each had 6 points. MDI was 13-23 from the free throw line.

Ellsworth was led by Autumn Paul with a career high 11 points! Jocelyn Jordan had 7 points. Ellsworth was 8-17 from the free throw line

MDI is now 1-0 and will play at Brewer on Wednesday, January 27th at 7 p.m. That game may be viewed on the Brewer High School Athletic You Tube Page

Ellsworth is 0-2 and will play at Sumner on Monday February 1st at 6:15 p.m. That game will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA, on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device.
