MDI Football Nipped by Waterville 30-28 in OT [PHOTOS]

The MDI Trojans fell to the Waterville Panthers 30-28 in overtime in Waterville on Saturday afternoon, October 9th.

AJ Lozano was the defensive player of the game for MDI with 4 interceptions and 1 fumble recovery.

MDI scored with 1:08 left in the 1st Quarter. Spencer Laurendeau ran in from 8 yards out , and the 2-point conversion was good. The drive took 5:43. MDI led 8-0.

Waterville answered on their next possession. Billy Place ran in from5 yards out. The 2-point conversion was good and the score was tied 8-8 with 10:47 remaining in the 1st Half. The Panther's drive took 2:15.

After returning the kick to their 43 yard line. MDI marched down the field, scoring on a 15 yard pass from Spencer Lauendeau to Brendan Graves. The 2-point conversion was good, and MDI led 16-8 with 6:09 left in the Half. The drive took 4:31

After Waterville coughed the ball up, and MDI recovered the fumble, the Trojans scored again. Spencer Laurendeau lofted a pass to the left corner of the end zone. The Waterville defender was flagged for pass interference, but AJ Lozano the intended receiver caught the ball after it bounced off the defender's helmet! What great concentration! The 2-point conversion was no good, and MDI led 22-8. The score came with 1:12 left

The 1st Half ended with MDI up 22-8

After a scoreless 3rd Quarter, Waterville scored with 8:49 remaining in the 4th Quarter. Wyatt Gradie completed a 8 yard pass to Dustan Hunter. The 2 point conversion was no good and MDI led 22-14.

MDI couldn't run out the clock, and Waterville took over on their final series with 2:08 left in the game, on their own 34 yard line. Their drive was helped by a big facemask call against MDI adding 15 yards to a play. The Panthers scored with their quarterback Wyatt Gradie scored from 1 yard out. The 2-point conversion was good, and the score ended tied 22-22 at the end of regulation.

MDI won the toss for overtime, and took over at their own 10 yard line. It took just 2 plays and Laurendeau ran in for the touchdown. The Trojan's 2-point conversion was no good. MDI was up 28-22.

Waterville took over on the 10 yard line. Tyson Smith powered in from 1 yard out, to tie the score 28-28. The Panthers won the game, when they converted the 2-point play, for the 30-28 victory.

MDI is now 1-4 and will play host to Ellsworth on Friday, October 15th at Alumni Field in Bar Harbor. That game will be broadcast on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP, and on any Alexa enabled device. The game will also be on AM 1370 WDEA as long as there isn't a Red Sox game on.

Waterville is now 4-1 and plays at Morse on Friday October 15th.
