MDI Boys Pickup Much Needed Win in a Squeaker Beating Washington Academy 46-45 [STATS]

The MDI Boy's Basketball Team picked up a much needed win, in a nail-biter in East Machias on Thursday, February 1st, with the Trojans winning 46-45.

The Red Raiders jumped out to an early lead in the 1st Quarter but MDI tied the score late in the 1st Quarter and the game was tied 11-11 at the end of the 1st Quarter.

In the 2nd Quarter it was the James Witham-Clay Crosman show. Witham, the freshman from MDI drained 4 3-pointers to account for all of MDI's 12 points in the Quarter. Meanwhile, Crosman, the senior, playing his last regular season home game, had 6 points. MDI led 23-19 at the Half.

In the 3rd Quarter Cal Hodgon had 7 points and Spencer Laurendeau hit a huge 3-pointer. MDI led 36-30.

In the 4th Quarter Spencer Laurendeau stepped to the free throw line with MDI up by 1 point, 44-43 and calmly sank 2 free-throws to give MDI the 46-43 lead. Washington Academy had a chance to tie on a 3-pointer but they missed, with Donnie Marzoll putting the rebound in for a 2-pointer at the buzzer, as the Trojans won 46-45.

MDI was led by James Witham with 19 points and 5 3-pointers. Cal Hodgdon had 11 points with 2 3-pointers. Laurendeau had MDI's other 3-pointer. The Trojans were 4-6 from the free throw line.

Washington Academy was led by Clay Crosman with a game-high 26 points. Ben Griffen had 9 points. Donavan Marzoll, Griffen and Crosman each had a 3-pointer. The Red Raiders were 14-19 from the free throw line.

Washington Academy finishes the regular season with a 8-10 record and will be on the road for a prelim game.

MDI is 8-9 and will host Ellsworth on Senior Recognition Night on Wednesday, February 7th at 7 p.m. That game will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA, on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device.
