MDI Boys Nipped in Rockland – Lose to Oceanside 50-48

The MDI Boys Basketball Team was nipped by the Oceanside Mariners in Rockland, losing to the Mariners 50-48 on Friday, January 4th. The Trojans had a chance to win the game, trailing 49-49 with 12 seconds left, but their shot bounced off the rim.

In a fast paced 1st Quarter, the Trojans jumped out to a 16-15 lead. Drew Shea sank 2 3's, Cadin Lunt and Brett Duley each had a 3-pointer, and Eli Parady and Derek Collin each had 2 points for MDI. For Oceanside Cooper Wirkala had 8 points, Trevor Reed 4 points and Jack Lomabardo a 3-pointer.

In the 2nd Quarter, MDI outscored Oceanside 9-3 to take a 25-18 lead. Oceanside scored their lone points with a Lombardo 3-pointer with just 1.4 seconds remaining in the Half. For MDI She had 6 more points, Steven Pierce 2 points and Porter Isaacs went 1-2 from the free throw line.

In the 3rd Quarter, Oceanside took a 34-33 lead, outscoring MDI 16-8 as they hit 4 3's. Lombardo had 2 more 3's, Wirkala had 5 points with a 3-pointer, Reed had a 3-pointer and Amos Anderson 2 points. For MDI Collin and Isaacs each had 4 points.

In the 4th Quarter Brett Duley had 6 points for MDI with a 3-pointer. Collin, Shea and Parady each had 2 points and Pierce had a 3-pointer for the Trojans. For Oceanside, Wirkala had 8 points with a 3-pointer, Reed and Lomardo had 3-pointers and Anderson 2 points.

MDI was led by Drew Shea with 14 points and Brett Duley had 9 points. The Trojans had 6 3's and were 2-5 from the free throw line.

Oceanside was led by Cooper Wirkala with a game high 21 points. Jack Lombardo had 5 3's for thee Mariners. Oceanside had 9 3's and were 3-4 from the free throw line.

MDI is now 6-2 and will play host to Ellsworth on Thursday, January 10th at 7PM with the pregame starting at 6:30. That game will be broadcast on WDEA AM 1370, on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device.
