MDI Advances 45-35
The MDI Trojans Boy's Basketball Team advanced to the Class B North Semifinals after defeating Belfast 45-35 on Friday night in the opening round of Tourney 2017 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
The score was tied 9-9 at the end of the 1st Quarter. Graham Good had 4 points, Riley Swanson had a 3-pointer and Derek Collin had 2 points for the Trojans. For Belfast Nolan Woods had a 3-pointer, Zane Bielenberg, Stanley Sturgis and Dakota Doolan had 2 points each. Belfast was 2-6 from the free throw line.
MDI outscored Belfast 9-8 to take a 18-17 lead at the Half. For the Trojans Graham Good had 4 points, Andrew Phelps 3 points and Aaron Snurkowski had 2 points. For Belfast Bielenberg had 4 points, Garrett Hamlin had 2 points and Ian Snowdeal had 2 points.
MDI outscored Belfast 11-7 in the 3rd Quarter to take a 29-24 lead. In the Quarter, MDI was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Good had 4 points for MDI, Andrew Phelps had a 3-pointer and Gus Reeves and Aaron Snurkowski each had 2 points. For Belfast, Bielenberg had 4 points, and Nolan Woods had a 3-pointer. The Lions were 2-4 from the free throw line.
In the 4th Quarter, MDI was gradually able to increase their lead. The Trojans continued to hit their free throws, going 7-12 in the Quarter. Russell Kropff had 6 points including a 3-pointer. Gus Reeves had 3 points, Aaron Snurkowski, Andrew Phelps and Riley Swanson had 2 points each and Graham Good chipped in with 1 point. For the Lions, Bielenberg, and Dakota Doolan each had 4 points and Nolan Woods had a 3-pointer.
MDI was led by Graham Good with 13 points, while Andrew Phelps had 8 and Aaron Snurkowski and Russell Kropff each had 6 points. MDI was 14-19 from the free throw line.
Belfast was led by Zane Bielenberg with a game high 14 points while Nolan Woods had 9 points with three 3-pointers. The Lions were 4-10 from the free throw line.
MDI is now 16-3 and will play Central High School on Wednesday February 22nd at 2 PM in a game that will be broadcast on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP sponsored by First National Bank and on AM 1370 WDEA.
Belfast finishes the season at 10-10.
