The Boston Red Sox continued to try improve the club prior to the stretch run, trading Marcelo Mayer to the San Francisco Giants for left-handed pitcher Erik Miller and minor league outfielder Carlos Gutierrez on Monday, August 3rd.

Mayer played in 70 games for the Red Sox this season hitting .220 with 10 doubles, 3 home runs and 22 runs batted in. He made 39 starts at 2nd base and 20 at shortstop. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on June 26th with a bone stress reaction to the left ulna.

Miller has made 38 appearances for the Giants, going 2-0 with 10 holds, 4 saves and a .2.76 ERA. He has struck out 45. He has made 14 consecutive scoreless appearnace since June 19th, tossing 13.0 innings.

Gutierrez was ranked as the Giants' number 24 prospect. He has played in 83 games for High-A Eugene, batting .271 with 18 doubles, 3 triples, 9 home runs, 45 runs batted in and 26 stolen bases.

Boston is off on Monday August 3rd, before opening a 6-game homestand on Tuesday, August 4th with 3 games against the White Sox followed by 3 games with the A's. Hear Tuesday's game on WDEA AM 1370 with the pregame starting at 6:10 p.m.
