Flags to Remain Lowered for 18 More Days for 18 Lewiston Victims

Flags will remain lowered for another 18 days in memory of the 18 people killed in Wednesday's Lewiston shooting.

When Will Flags Return to Full-Staff?

Originally, Governor Janet Mills and President Joe Biden ordered the United States and State of Maine flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset Monday, October 30th. But now, Governor Mills has announced that the flags will remain at half-staff statewide for the next 18 days. Each day will be in honor of one of the victims who lost their lives at the hands of a mass shooter in Lewiston on October 25th, 2023. Flags will be restored to full-mast at sunset on November 17th, 2023.

Why Has This Been Extended 18 Days?

The 18 victims died in mass shootings at the Just-in-Time Recreation bowling alley and at Schemengees Bar & Grill and ranged in age from 14 to 73. 13 others were injured in the attacks, several of whom are still being treated at area hospitals. The man accused of carrying out the murders was found on Friday, October 27th, 2023 in a trailer, near Maine Recycling Corporation, where he used to work. Robert Card appeared to have taken his own life before police could find him.

Does the Governor Have a Plan Going Forward?

Governor Mills has pledged a variety of services for the people of Lewiston and Maine who are struggling to cope with their emotions. Those services, initially, will include help for students to help them feel comfortable returning to school.
