February 1st - 7th is National Cheerleading Week, and we definitely need to give some love and a shout-out to the Cheerleading Teams in Maine!

After watching cheerleaders perform at football and basketball games in the fall and winter and then compete at their own championships I will tell you that these athletes (yes athletes!) are some of the hardest working and most underappreciated in their high schools!

They're out there freezing at home and away football games, often times, outside of the parents the only ones cheering for the team on the road. In the winter, they're usually at every home basketball game (18) while practicing daily for their own competitions.

And those competitions! In normal years, they pack the Cross Insurance Center for the Northern Maine championships with tumbling and stunting that is breathtaking, all the while smiling while their hearts are pounding!

Because of the pandemic, they haven't been able to cheer at the basketball games. They will be all competing virtually for the Cheering Championships, taping their routines and sending them to be judged.

Upcoming events include

  • February 23 - Ellsworth Cheer Invitational
  • March 5 - PVC Cheer Championships
  • March 19 - State Cheering Championships
