The Ellsworth Girls Basketball Team beat MDI 40-36 on Tuesday, February 4th in the final regular season game for both teams.

Ellsworth led 10-9 at the end of the 1st Quarter, and led 23-22 at the end of the 1st Half. The Trojans led 31-30 at the end of the 3rd Quarter.

Prior to the game, both teams combined for a magical moment for the Ellsworth Seniors who have been injured for most of the season.

If you've been following the Ellsworth Girl's Basketball Team you know that they have been decimated by injuries this season. Seniors Abby Radel and Elise Sargent have been lost for the season. Seniors Addison Atherton and Lily Bean missed sizeable portions of the season to injury. Junior Elizabeth Boles has missed the majority of the second half of the season. Not once did these 5 players, the planned starters, take the court together in the regular season...Until the final game of the season.

Athletic Directors Josh Frost (Ellsworth) and Bunky Dow (MDI) along with coaches Andy Pooler (Ellsworth) and Brent Barker (MDI) combined to create the magical moment.

First, Radel, Sargent, Atherton, Bean and Boles were announced as starters. After the national anthem Atherton won the uncontested tip-off, with the ball going to Lily Bean who then passed it to Abby Radel, who passed it to Lizzy Boles who in turn passed it to Elise Sargent, who threw it to Coach Pooler out of bounds.

Ellsworth was led by Austyn Atherton with 13 points including 3 3-pointers. Lily Bean had 7 points with a 3-pointer, and Addison Atherton had 7 points. Lily Bean had 7 points with a 3-pointer. Kaylee Bagley had 2 3-pointers. The Eagles were 6-8 from the free throw line.

MDI was led by Ella Watson with 10 points, including a 3-pointer. Lily Norwood had 9 points with a 3-pointer. Lilli Hanf had a 3-pointer. The Trojans were 9-13 from the free throw line.

Ellsworth finishes the season with a record of 12-6 and are guaranteed to finish either 3rd or 4th, with an automatic bye to play a quarterfinal game at the Cross Insurance Center.

MDI finishes the season with an 11-7 record. They are currently 4th, in the Class B Northern Maine Heal Point Standings. The only team that can overtake them is Erskine Academy (13-4) who plays at Lincoln Academy on February 6th. If MDI drops to 5th they will  still earn an automatic bye and play a quarterfinal game at the Cross Insurance Center.

All the MDI and Ellsworth Tournament games, including any prelim games will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA, on WDEA Internet Radio, on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device.
