Ellsworth Boys Beat Orono 58-50 to Win PVC Class B Pod Championship [STATS/RECAP]

The Ellsworth Boys Basketball Team used some clutch free throw shooting in the 4th Quarter to beat the Orono Red Riots 58-50 Tuesday night, March 9th in the PVC Class B Pod Championship Game at Katsiaficas Gymnasium in Ellsworth.

The game was a back and forth affair, and much closer than the final score indicates, although Ellsworth led by as much as 10 points in the final quarter.

Orono led 15-13 at the end of the 1st Quarter. Zack Dill had 6 points for Orono with a 3-pointer, while Pierce Walston had 5 points with a 3-pointer. Jason DeSisto and Ben Francis each had 2 points. For Ellsworth Hunter Curtis had 5 points with a 3-pointer, Chance Mercier had 4 points, Miles Palmer had 2 points and Eamon MacDonald was 2-2 from the free throw line.

In the 2nd Quarter Ellsworth cut the lead to 1 point, outscoring Orono 13-12, to make Orono's lead 27-26 at the Half. Hunter Curtis had 7 points for Ellsworth with a 3-pointer while Eamon MacDonald hit 2 3-'s for 6 points. For Orono Jason DeSisto had a 3-pointer and Zack Dill, Pierce Walston, Javier Santiago and Lucas Allen each had a bakset for 2 points while Jordan Cota was 1-2 from the free throw line.

In the 3rd Quarter Orono outscored Ellsworth 11-10 to take a 38-36 lead. Dill had 6 points for the Red Riots with a 3-pointer, Walston a 3-pointer and Santiago 2 points. For Ellsworth Hunter Curtis had 4 points, and Chance Mercier, Brody Mercier and Michael Palmer each had a basket for 2 points.

In the 4th Quarter Ellsworth was 12-15 from the free throw line, led by Eamon MacDonald's perfect 6-6 as they outscored the Red Riots 22-12. In addition to MacDonald's 6 points, Chance Mercier had 7 points going 5-6 from the free throw line. Hunter Curtis had 5 points and Michael Palmer 4 points. For Orono Jason DeSisto had 7 points with his 2nd 3-pointer, Javier Santiago was 3-4 from the free throw line and Pierce Walston had 2 points.

Ellsworth was led by Hunter Curtis with a game high 21 points. Eamon MacDonald had 14 points while Chance Mercier had 13 points. Ellsworth was 14-17 from the free throw line.

Orono was led by Zack Dill with 14 points, while Pierce Walston and Jason DeSisto each had 12 points. Orono was 8-17 from the free throw line.

Ellsworth will now play Brewer Friday night, March 12th in the PVC AA-A/B Finals at Brewer High School. That game will be live streamed HERE
